Southgate Recycles
Did you know that Southgate purchases 25% of its power needs from wind-generated electricity? An active supporter since 2004, Southgate Centre and Ivanhoe Cambridge are proud to be the leading users of green power in the North America real estate industry to reduce greenhouse emissions.
Recycling at Southgate is a process that is continually evolving as we seek better and more progressive environmental solutions to deal with the waste that we produce.
Our goal over the next year is to increase our waste diversion rate to beyond 50%. The most important factor in achieving this goal is to keep our tenants informed and to educate those that are unsure of our procedures.
The installation of 38 new three compartment waste containers in the existing and expansion mall common areas have had a very positive result in our recyclable bottle and can capture rates, as well as an improvement in the paper category. Our organic waste collection program has thus far diverted 23 metric tons of organic material to the City of Edmonton composting facility and our ‘condiment capture’ program has sent 450 pounds of unused condiments to our local Food Bank.
We are currently looking into the feasibility of a ‘Blue Bag’ program for our tenants. Look for the launch of this program in the latter part of the year. We are also researching a multi-waste bin for our exterior entrances.
