Our very simple guide to Dressing for the Office! Tune into Breakfast Television tomorrow at 8:40am to see some gorgeous spring items that will suit your office attire!

Casual
The most relaxed of office dress codes, or can be found on certain days, such as “Casual Fridays”. Your outfit should still look put-together and office appropriate.
Acceptable pieces:

Dark jeans acceptable for both men and women

Dressy top such as sweater, blouse, button-down shirt, polo

Fashionable t-shirts may be dressed up with blazers or cardigans

For a great pair of denim (no holes, little to no distressing!) try Street, The Bay, The Gap and Zara for a fine selection of some of our favourite jeans! (We’ve heard Not Your Daughter’s Jeans are a huge hit ladies!)

Business Casual
This is most common dress code for office attire, which consists of classic business pieces. Suits are not required, but appearance should be kept professional.
Acceptable pieces:

For men: shirt with collar (button-down or polo), trousers/khakis/chinos, blazer optional, modest dress shoes (such as loafers)

For women: blouse/polo/sweater, trousers/khakis/chinos or knee-length (or longer) skirt/dress, blazer optional, closed toed dress shoes often preferred

Some stores to explore for business casual include: RW & Co, Banana Republic, Le Chateau, The Gap, Eddie Bauer, Zara, and Reitmans!

Business
The most formal of the office dress codes, usually found in a very professional environment. Suits are generally what make this dress code considered “business”.
Acceptable pieces:

Suits for both men and women (if not required for women, cardigan can replace jacket)

For men: collared shirts, tie, dress shoes

For women: dressy blouse/collared shirt, close toed dress shoes and even perhaps nylons

If you are among the Business Attire crowd, have a look at BCBG Max Azria, Michael Kors, Aritzia, Banana Republic, The Bay, Blu’s Women’s Wear and J. Michaels!

What to Avoid

Low necklines/exposed cleavage

Inappropriate/visible undergarments

Short hemlines

Ripped or dirty clothing

Leggings as pants, or yoga pants (unless deemed acceptable for casual attire)

Flip flops

Anything you would wear to the bar or beach

Stylist Tips for Adding Personality to Your Wardrobe

Add bright color or bold patterns with your classic pieces

Try incorporating textures, such as tweed, wool, boucle, houndstooth, and linen

For women: accessories, such as a statement necklace, stacks of bangles, scarves, handbags, and eye-catching shoes can transform your outfit

For men: play with different ties and cufflinks for a unique look

For the brave: try using contrasting colors in your outfit, or mixing different patterns of the same color family

Take the same principles you use when being creative with your everyday wardrobe and fuse some of them into your business wardrobe
